14 ἐλέφᾱς
ἐλέφᾱς, - αντοςGrammatical information: m.Meaning: `ivory, elefant-tooth' (Il.; cf. Treu Philol. 99, 149ff.), `elefant' (Hdt.), also as the name of a disease = ἐλεφαντίασις, s. Strömberg Theophrastea 193.Compounds: As 1. member in both meanings, ἐλεφαντό-πους `with ivory feet' (Pl. Com.), ἐλέφᾱς - μάχος `fighting elephants' (Str.).Derivatives: Diminut. ἐλεφαντίσκιον `young elephant' (Ael.); adj. ἐλεφάντινος `of ivory' (Alc., Att.), - ίνεος `id.' (inscr.; on the formation Chantr. Form. 203), ἐλεφάντ-ειος `belonging to an elephant' (Dsc., Opp.), - ώδης `elephant-like' (Mediz.), - ιωδής `suffering from eleph.' (medic.); subst. ἐλεφαντιστής `elephant-driver' (Arist.), also `shield from elephant-skin' (App.; example?), ἐλεφαντεύς `ivory-worker' (pap.). Denomin. ἐλεφαντ-ιάω `suffer from eleph.' (Phld., medic.) with - ίασις, also - ιασμός (EM); - όω `with ivory inlays' with - ωτός (nscr.).Origin: LW [a loanword which is (probably) not of Pre-Greek origin] Egypt.Etymology: Like Lat. ebur ἐλέφας is a foreigm word. The final (except the ντ-suffix) recalls like Lat. eb-ur an Egypt. āb(u), Copt. εβ(ο)υ `elephant, ivory', Skt. íbha- `elephant'; the begin recurs in Hamit. eḷu `elephant' (from where through Egypt. [p- Art.] Pers. pīl, Arab. fīl); details remain unclear. - From ἐλέφας Lat. elephās, elephantus, from there the Germanic and Romance forms. W.-Hofmann s. ebur, Lokotsch Et. Wb. d. europ. 15 θρῖναξ
θρῖναξ, - ακοςGrammatical information: f.Meaning: `three-pronged fork, trident' (Ar., Tab. Heracl. 1, 5, Nic.).Derivatives: From there Θρινακίη f. "fork-island", name of a mythical island (Od.), later identified with Sicily, through folketymology changed to Τρινακρία ( τρία ἄκρα); also Θρινακίς f. (Str.); adj. Θρινάκιος `Sicilian' (Nic.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: Technical word in - ᾰξ (Chantraine Formation 377ff.). Mostly interpreted as a compound with τρι- `three': acc. to Sommer Lautstud. 55ff. from IE * tri-snak- (to Eng. snag `tooth' etc.); after Kretschmer BphW 1906, 55 from *trisn-aḱ `with three points' (IE * tris-no- = Lat. ternī); acc. to Geffcken-Herbig Glotta 9, 103f. from * tri-snak- to νάκη, νάκος (?). - Or to θρῖον `fig-leaf' (because of the form)?; cf. also θρινία ἄμπελος ἐν Κρήτῃ H. - The IE etymologies have failed. Fur. 189 compares τρίναξ `an instrument in agriculture'; note also the frequent suffix - ακ-Page in Frisk: 1,683-684Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > θρῖναξ

16 κνώδαλον
Grammatical information: n.Meaning: `wild or harmful animal' (ρ 317).Derivatives: κνωδαλώδης (Tz.). - κνώδᾱξ, -ᾱκος m. `pin, pivot', also `sockets for an axe' (Hero, Ph. Bel.) with κνωδάκιον and κνωδακίζω `hang on pivots' (Hero). - κνώδων, - οντος m., in plur. `tooths of a sword or a javelin', in sing. `sword' (S., X.).Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]Etymology: To κνώδαλον: κνώδων remember pairs like ἀγκάλη: ἀγκών, ὀμφαλός: Lat. umbō (Schwyzer 483, Chantraine Formation 246); κνωδον-τ- could be secondary for *κνωδον- (Schwyzer 526). In any case κνώδαλον and κνώδων as well as κνώδαξ (on -ᾱξ Schwyzer 497, Chantraine 381; also Björck Alpha impurum 69: from Doric engineering?) go back on a verbal noun *κνωδ(ο-) prob `tooth', prop. "biter, gnawer", which may belong to κνῆ-ν etc. (s. - κναίω). Here also κάναδοι σιαγόνες, γνάθοι H.; κναδ-άλ-λεται κνήθεται H.; not to Lith. kándu `bite, s. on γνάθος. These words are no doubt Pre-Greek; we noted that κναδ- cannot have an IE preform (s. on - κναίω; καναδ- has a strange un-IE `ablaut'. I am not sure that κνώδαξ belongs with the other words. S. also κνώψ.See also: S. auch κνώψ.Page in Frisk: 1,887-888Greek-English etymological dictionary (Ελληνικά-Αγγλικά ετυμολογική λεξικό) > κνώδαλον
